B-Hop named Barclays boxing ambassador
People will tune in all over the world in huge numbersexcept in the most populous country on the planet, where the fight won’t even be a blip on the radar. That’s what makes another fight, one being completely ignored in the American press, perhaps the most important bout of the year. At the moment, it’s meaningless from a sporting perspectivea rising amateur star in just his second professional bout. But when flyweight Zou Shiming, a two-time Chinese Olympic gold medalist, takes the ring once again in front of his countrymen, you’re, perhaps, looking at the future of big-time boxing. In 2008, Zou became China’s first boxing gold medalist, just 16 years after it first entered Olympic competition in the sport and just decades since boxing training began in earnest in China after having been banned by Communist leader Mao Zedong in the 1960s. Now a national icon, the 32-year-old fighter is what every promoter and the head of every sports league in the world wantsan in into China.

Top Rank has signed the Ukrainian Olympic star, the promotional company announced Friday. Lomachenko is widely considered one of the greatest amateur boxers of the past several decades. He won Olympic gold medals with unbeaten runs in Beijing and London, and he claimed two world championships in between. After considering a career with the professional arm of the International Boxing Association (AIBA) last year, Lomachenko interviewed with several top North American promoters last month, eventually choosing Bob Arum’s company. Lomachenko is expected to begin his pro career as a featherweight.

Anyone who stops Ricky Hatton is a dangerous fighter and one that I will take very seriously, so I can’t wait to get in there and train very hard to put on a good show for my fans in Sheffield. “He’s been a world champion, been there and done it, so he will be out to prove that he’s worthy of another crack at being on top of the world. I really get up for it when I box in Sheffield, it’ll be packed to the rafters and they are really passionate fans – so I can’t wait to be back in my Arena, in a big fight that will take me closer to a world title shot. “Im on the doorstep of a world title and I’m ready to show I have what it takes to win it. Promoter Eddie Hearn said: “I’m delighted to make this fight and feel it’s the perfect fight for Kell at this time. “It’s without doubt his sternest test yet and Senchenko brings credibility as a former world title holder and mass appeal after his KO win over Ricky Hatton. “We are going to put on a special show in Sheffield and the atmosphere will be electric.” Brook is still the mandatory challenger to Devon Alexander’s IBF welterweight strap, but has seen the fight rescheduled, postponed or cancelled three times due to injuries from both fighters.
19 title defense against Karo Murat in Atlantic City. “I will be able to reach kids that are difficult. You are going to lose some, but you have to give the message, and you hope they listen.” Barclays CEO Brett Yormark told NYFightblog that he believes Hopkins can be integral in continuing to build a base of boxing fans in Brooklyn and beyond. “We’ve introduced boxing to the community and wanted to take that a step further,” he said. “It’s important to have Bernard as an ambassador, as a face for the program. I think he’s a wonderful spokesperson and I’m honored to have him with us.” My take: Barclays is on a roll; it is the top-grossing U.S. venue in the last six months for concerts and family shows, according to Billboard, and is No.

As for Chaves [22-0 18 KO], hes one of what seems like an endless supply of feisty Argentines, intent on ending fights within the distance. In fact, 16 of his 22 career bouts have gone fewer than three rounds. Chaves interim title belt is on the line on Saturday, but so is the chance of a significant boost for either guys in the welterweight standings. Both guys are marketable but only one will more than likely be left standing. Watch this space.
